After 2 days i Installed SQL 2005 Standerd , I said my be there's something wrong with Express version. After installed SQL Standerd still the same problem.

When i lunch Microsoft SQL Server Mangement Studio it's working fine.

And when I go to my Computer and Right Click and chose Mange it showed me that SQL 2005 working fine beside SQL 2000, but still show me message that it's not working, i don't know why!!!

PS..
My Computer Name is AHMED
My SQL Server 2005 Name is NADA2005
My SQL Server 2000 Name is NADA or local ( it's working with both )

Thanks alot

Ahmed

Make sure that the instancename is specified in the connectionstring for the ASP application. if SQL Server Browser Server is no longer running start it (to let is redirect the application to the appropiate port, as I assume, Port 1433 is already occupied by the 2k instance) or specify the port number after the instancename with the syntax as:

ServerName\InstanceName,portnumber

Promlem with loging in Managment Studio

hi

I'm going to use Enterprise edition

when I want to log in Managment Studio I face a window asking me for Server Name in addition to Server Type and authentication mode.

what should I write in Server Name section.I know the format is:

ComputerName\Instance Name

but what should I write in Instance Name?

thanks

Hello -

If you've installed SQL Server on the system with all the defaults, you don't have to type anything in the instance name. It's just the name of the server. If you installed SQL Server Express, it installs as a named instance by default. Usually it is named SQLExpress, so the name would be:

(your Server name)\SQLEXPRESS

To find out if the server is default or named, open a command prompt in Windows and type this:

NET START

Look for the service that starts with "SQL Server" in the name and to the right you'll see if it is a named instance or not. It will have the name of the instance in parenthesis, and if it is MSSQLSERVER it's default, and you don't have to type anything other than the server name. If it has something else there, it is named and that is the name you type.

You have to know what the instance name is; we can't tell you that. The best advice I can give you is to launch the SQL Server Configuration Manager (In your Start Menu->SQL Server 2005->Configuration Tools folder), browse to the Services tab, and locate any service that has a Service Type of "SQL Server", and then work from there.

If the service name is "SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)" then you do not have an instance name (just use the computer name)

If the service name is "SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)" then use ComputerName\SqlExpress

Programming with OLEDB and ADO.NET

Hi
I currently use OLEDB in my C++ application to connect to MSSQL. I am
considering moving to ADO.NET.
Is there a document outlining the difference between them?
Lawrence
Lawrence,
I have posted a couple of links below one of which is a comparitave overview
of ADO and ADO.net and the other is data retrevial and modification using
ADO.net. OLEDB is still a part of ADO but you now have access to native SQL
in the SQLClient namespace (that is if you are using Sql Server).
Hope this helps.

I found another link with a good article of the evolution of the data access
model. This may give you a better understanding in the change of the model
from OLE DB to ADO.net.
Good Luck.

|||Thanks for these articles.
They did not really help me. They refer to using OLE DB with a COM interface.
I did not go that direction using C++ but used the API.

I am sorry that this information did not help you. Maybe I have
misunderstood what you are wanting to do. Is there something specific that
you are trying to accomplish that you have a question about?

Programming databaseconnections?

Hi!

I want some tutorials on how to actually program database applications. Everything seems so bound with the data controls provided by Visual Studio and coming from PHP I don't like to not have full control over my applications. So where can I learn about creating my own database applications without using repeater, gridview or formview?

Thank you in advance!

yes data controls can be over-welming and I see many instances where the pursuit of them consumes more effort that a more procedural approach. Coming from PHO, have you looked at http://www.learn2asp.net/php/Campaign.aspx - these should help your transition to ASP.NET from PHP.

There are also some good tutorials on programming database applications at http://www.asp.net/learn/videos/default.aspx?tabid=63

Programmatically create DSN usind SQL Server Authentication

Hi
I am trying to programmatically create a DSN on a target system for SQL
Server using SQL Server Authentication.
There are documented solutions for using Windows authentication, but the
SQL Server authentication evades me.
1. Hard-coding in the registry:
Microsoft illustrates this in
HOWTO: Programmatically Create a DSN for SQL Server with VB
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q184608
KHLM/SOFTWARE/ODBC/ODBC.INI/<dsn-name> allows me to set LastUser, but I
have not found a way to specify the user's password in the registry (if at
all possible).
2. Windows API:
Microsoft's document HOWTO: Create and Remove a DSN in Visual Basic
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q171146
is off-topic for my purpose because it only shows Windows authentication.
ODBCCP32.DLL has a function SQLConfigDataSource, and that works fine,
provided that Windows Authentication is used. It does not work for SQL
Server Authentication, as documented in
http://www.sqlmonster.com/Uwe/Forum...1335/Problems-
setting-DSN-from-csharp-when
3. It looks like odbcconf.exe might be a possibility, with something like
odbcconf /A {CONFIGDSN "SQL Server"}
but I could not yet get it working. and I cannot find documentation or a
good working example. Adding SQL Server attributes just result in the
message "DSN Attributes are missing"
odbcconf /A {CONFIGDSN "SQL Server|DSN=Test|DATABASE=pubs|UID=nnn|PWD=xxx"}
4. I cannot use the RegisterDatabase function in VB as documented in
HOWTO: Set Up ODBC Data Sources When Distributing Apps
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;123008
I need a solution I can implement in C#, C++ and Installshield's
Installscript. This solution also documents only Windows authentication.
5. Letting the user configure this manually, e.g. by starting the control
panel applet, is not an option. Using DSN-less connection options is also
out.
Can anyone tell me whether it is at all possible to programmatically create
a DSN for SQL Server, using SQL Server Authentication, and how I can
specify the UID and PWD for the user?
Thanks

Not when you create the DSN programmatically. You may find
some old references on how to do it creating keys in the
registry but the driver will ignore those. From the
application side, you'd have to pass in the user id and
password in the connection string or from the application
that references the DSN.
