Protect Data and Schema SQL SERVER 2005 EXPRESS

We have a commercial VB.NET winforms client/server application that utilizes SQL Server 2005 express edition. The schema and data that the application utilizes is proprietary and could be very damaging if it got into a competitors hands.

Is there any way to protect the data and schema of a sql server 2005 express edition database?

Will this functionality ever be added?

Thanks

As long as youhand over the database to someone, he will have full control over the database, attaching it to its own server and reading the schema from the database. What you can do is to encrypt data as well as stored procedures with certificates. But the schema won′t be hideable as the database will be given to the other party.

When i lunch Microsoft SQL Server Mangement Studio it's working fine.

And when I go to my Computer and Right Click and chose Mange it showed me that SQL 2005 working fine beside SQL 2000, but still show me message that it's not working, i don't know why!!!

PS..
My Computer Name is AHMED
My SQL Server 2005 Name is NADA2005
My SQL Server 2000 Name is NADA or local ( it's working with both )

Thanks alot

Ahmed

Make sure that the instancename is specified in the connectionstring for the ASP application. if SQL Server Browser Server is no longer running start it (to let is redirect the application to the appropiate port, as I assume, Port 1433 is already occupied by the 2k instance) or specify the port number after the instancename with the syntax as:

ServerName\InstanceName,portnumber

Promblem with log in Managment studio

hi

Until now I was using SQLServer Express edition and whenever I wanted to log in Management Studio In the Server Name section I used to wirte MyComputername\SQLExpress

but now I'm going to use Enterprise edition

what should I write in the Server Name section to log in Management studio?

Hi,

well, that depends. If you are using a default instance it should be just the "servername" or "." or "(localhost)". If you are using a named instance it should be something like your mentioned combination with the name of the instance substituted with the SQLExpress keyword.

MachineName\NameInstanceName

i repaired my problem with the SQLserver Express.....now i know how to use....but nowadays i have some problems with my DataBase....i would like you people share your DataBase to see what is my problem......mi msn is jmontes32@.hotmail.com .......if you give some programs....i will learn more about SQL server..

sorry if you find some grammmathical mistakes....i'm learnig english

see you

jamie

You most likely will not have many folks 'sharing' their databases with you.

However, you can download and install sample databases that Microsoft makes available.

Here are three.

Databases -AdventureWorks
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms124659.aspx

Databases -Northwind and Pubs

Programming SQL Express to SQL 2005 replication

Hi Everyone

I have a huge problem after I noticed that SQL Server Agent has been removed

and need your advice about how to program replication between SQL Server Express and SQL Server 2005

So far I have encountered the following problems

SNAPSHOT

1. When I created my snapshot Irealized it wasnt running. I then read from the documentation that i had to resort to the Windows Synchronization Manager as there was no SQL Server AGENT within SQL Server Express to accomplish this function

I did this and it worked but wouldlike to control this programmatically as well

REPLICATION

2. Now I have a standalone SQL Server Express which is a subsciber to the SQL Server 2005 Database

How can I force the merge replication programmatically ie Vb.NET

Your kind advice is appreciated

Regards

Touraj

To learn how to use replication with SQL Express, see topic "Replicating Data to SQL Express" in Books Online.

Programming SQL Express

Hey, i have an installer that places ms sql express onto a machine. thats is fine. i want to create a post setup application that runs after ms sql server is installed. what for example i want to do is be able to create a user and have the DB allow remote connections. i can provide instructions for a 'peon' to make the required post setup changes but i want to see if i can cover that with an application. thanks

Charles Rezsonya

Write this as T-SQl and then either write code that calls into the database and execute the script(call this code from your installer), or include a .sql file with the script as part of your installation and then call that through a call to sqlcmd to execute.

Either way I recomend having a copy of the script as part of your install so that if something goes wrong you can at least walk a user through running the script by hand.

|||Hi,

These things can be easily changed using the SMO namespace:

using Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Wmi;

(....)

ManagedComputer comp = new ManagedComputer(".");

comp.ClientProtocols["tcp"].IsEnabled = true;
(...)

Remeber to restart the service after changing this.

damn, but i am having a problem. i am using visual studio 2003 and when i go to about it says my .net framework is 1.1. is that a problem for the following message?

a referance to 'c:\program file\microsoft sql server\90\sdk\microsoft.sqlserver.sqlenum.dll' could not be added. this is not a valid or COM component. only assemblies with extension 'dll' and com components can be referenced. please make sure that the file is accessible, and that it is a valid assembly or com component.

|||is it possible to do this with visual studio 2003?|||

I don't believe so.

SMO is a SQL 2005 and .NET Framework 2.0 technology. I think that VS 2003 is locked into NetFx1.1. (Any VS experts can feel free to correct me.) You have a couple alternatives:

Move up to VS 2005, you can get the VS Express Editions for free if you like. They have some reduced functionality.

programmatically restore a database

I recently had to find ways to programmatically backup and restore an
SQL Server Express database.
For backup, I found a one-liner stored procedure that does the job
(BACKUP DATABASE Toy to disk = 'c:\Projects\Toy.bak'.
My question is, is there something as simple for a restore operation?

Thanks in Advance

-KostasYes, use : RESTORE DATABASE MyNwind FROM MyNwind_1 (i've taken this from
BOL) for more involved examples check BOL

Note you may need to specify additional RESTORE options in some situations.
For example, database files will be restored to the original locations by
default. If you are restoring to a machine with a different drive/folder
structure, you'll need specify different file paths using the WITH MOVE
option.
