Prompt for user credentials for database

Hello friends,

In my web application I have saved my connection string into web.config file. Now I have to send this web application to the client in the form of web set up. The issue is that on the client side, user credentials for the database will be different. So can we do some setings that the web application whenever will run should ask for the server name, username & Password. If this can be done then the application can be run anywhere considering all compatibilities.

Please let me know how this can be done.

Thanks & Regards
Girish Nehte

Hi,

We also encounter same issue...we have done following things...

we have stored IP,Database Name,userid and password ( separated by "," ) in notepad file and saved it at some common location.

and in applications we are referring this information to access database...

and we are telling client to put these details in file...so user can not make any other changes in web.config by mistake.

Hi there,

Maybe I didn't understand well what's your problem, but it seems quite simple to me.

You only have one connection string (or user of the database). Then you have, for example, a table with many usernames/passwords you like.

When your client uses the applicaction, you ask for credentials right? Then you use your connection string, to check if its credentials match with any stored on the passwords table! If so you allow him to continue. If not, you don't allow the client to continue.

Hope it helped out :) And its safer than having it written on a text file!

PROGRESS import of field freezes SQL Server

hi,
I've got a SQL 2005 with an odbc connection to a PROGRESS database. We can
transfer data from the progress to the sql but there is 1 field we can not
transfer. This field, proclaimed by the PROGRESS administration, is a field
wich can contain an empty string or up to 8 characters.
But when we try to do a 'select problemfield, goodfield1,goodfield2 from
pub.table' in the import and export wizard and try to preview this select,
SQL Server freezes for a loooooong time resulting in an error "defined by
component".
We have tried to put the problem field into the select clause, with the
where clause without the where clause... always the same result. The datatyp
e
that we use is a varchar(8) or more but it always freezes.
Does anyone have an idea?
Note: when progress exports to a flat file and we import that flat file,
this works without any problems. So instead of using the odbc connection to
transfer the data overnight, we would like to use flat files and import them
with Integration S. Good solution or not?Ok,
We managed to get the import; but via a flatfile source not with the odbc
connector. Wat went wrong I cant say, it wasn't possible to import the field
s
via a ODBC connection, the flatfime however imported like nothing (although
it where millions of rows)
We have to do a lot of cleansing, the progress software sets a ? in fields
that are not filled in. In this case, implicit conversions to smalldatatime
fails. Now that we have everything in nvarchar, I'm sure SSIS will bring us
where we want.
Thx,

Programmatically Set Flat File Destination Name (relating to timestamp)

One simple question:
I need dumping data from table to a file daily with file name relating to time stamp. The flat file connection manager editor only allow you to set the STATIC file name. Suppose I programmtically passing the time now to a User::TimeNowVariable, how do I set the file name programmatically relating to this variable?

This is a very classic issue associated to Graphical Programming, it seems to be very difficult to understand how to do a very simple programmatic property setting like this, uncless you KNEW it.

I appreciate any helpful info provided.

JordanUse expressions on the Flat File Connection Manager to set the Connection String using the variable.

Programmatically set a Flat File Connection Manager

Hello,

I need to know how I can programmatically set a Flat File Connection Manager's Column Delimiter value.

The Data Warehouse project I am working on, receives daily information feeds that could contain one of two delimiters. Which is just dumb...anyways, as it is now we have two seperate Data Flow Tasks which handle these two delimiters. Currently we have a script taks that "sneak previews" each incoming flat file to determine which delimiter it has, and direct our flow to the correct Data Flow Task to handle it.

I do not want to have to maintain 2 DFTs. How can I get around this problem?

Even if there is a way to do this by passing variables/setting expressions in the Flat File Connection manager, I would do that. Does not necessarily HAVE to be a pure programmatic approach.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

Feel free to email me at ccorbin@.topcoder.com with any questions, or leave me some good news here :)

THANKS!

I thought this was a simple question. Apparently, you can use an expression to set every property of the File Connection Manager except the column delimiter. Maybe that will change in the near future. There must be a reason.|||ColumnDelimiter is a property of the FlatFileColumn, and not the connection manager. Due to which currently it is not expressionable. Feel free to raise a DCR(Design Change Request) for this issue.|||

How would I go about raising a DCR?

Thanks

Programmatically iterating tasks/components in the data flow portion of a package.

HI All,

In several threads there has been discussion regarding adding connection managers to a package's data flow, etc. My challenge is that I have a large solution that contains many packages, and I need to change the connection manager linked to the data flow in all of the packages. When the solution was initially designed, data sources were used, and it has become a tedious maintenance issue to keep those in sync. We want to use a standard OLEDB connection manager, but adding a connection manager to each package and editing the corresponding data flow tasks in each package to use that new connection manager is a daunting task. I've coded a .Net module to access the packages, remove the old connection manager (data source) and add the new OLEDB data source. However, as I traverse the objects in the package hierarchy, when I come to the data flow object, the innerobject is not a dts object, but rather a _com object.. I can't seem to find any documentation/examples as to how to iterate the tasks within a data flow and change the connection manager. If you have any information, that would be quite helpful. If you reply with a code sample, if you would be so kind as to relate it to one of the sample packages provided with SSIS so I can run it, that would be great.

Thank you.

Steve.

Programmatically developing an entire package..

Hi all,

I am trying to write a program that creates packages on the fly depending on the variables you pass. for eg. It should create connection managers on the fly specific to a certain file in the variable (eg. sample.csv). the package has a dataflow task and it has flat file source and oledb destination.The problem I am facing is the flat file source when assigned to a flat file connection manager(dynamically), it is not giving any source output columns. i.e, the value for DFSource.OutputCollection(0).OutputColumnCollection.Count is Zero. But when I use the same code and reverse the source and destination(oledb as source and flatfile as destination), it is working fine. I searched everywhere for resources on how to develop packages programmatically, but could not find any except one example on msdn. If anyone knows about this prob or any useful resources on this subject, it would be really helpful.

Thanks,

Prithvi.

This is the code for creating connections and adding dataflow task. I need to add a script component transformation, but initially I wanted to see if a one-to-one mapping works fine.

Public Sub CreateConnections()

'Add the OLE DB and Flat File Connection Managers

Console.WriteLine("Creating the MyOLEDBConnection")

Dim cnOLEDB As ConnectionManager = myPackage.Connections.Add("OLEDB")

cnFile.Properties("ColumnNamesInFirstDataRow").SetValue(cnFile, False)

cnFile.Properties("DataRowsToSkip").SetValue(cnFile, 0)

cnFile.Properties("RowDelimiter").SetValue(cnFile, vbCrLf)

cnFile.Properties("TextQualifier").SetValue(cnFile, """")

End Sub

Public Sub AddDataFlowTask()

Please see if i did wrong any where(which I always happen to do). But based on the msdn material, the above code should work, i guess.

Programmatically Adding ADO.NET Connections

I can't find any documentation on the connection string for creating ADO.NET connections.

I am displaying a report in a viewer. It is connected to a wrapper DLL through an ADO.NET connection using the properties:
File Path
Class Name
Dataset Names

I'm having trouble accessing these to change them at runtime.

I've tried something like:
rpt.database:Tables(1):ConnectionProperties("File Path") = "c:\..."

No luck. Crystal doesn't have much documentation on this method. Any takers?Nevermind. Got it.

I was able to override the path of my DLL at runtime using the syntax:

report.database.tables(1).ConnectionProperties("File Path").Value = "c:\blah"

seems to be working.

Programatically create and configure a FlatFileConnectionManager

I am writing some C# code that builds a package programatically. the package contains a flat file connection manager. I have referenced Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper in order that I can use the ConnectionManagerFlatFileClass class.

Here is some of my code:

Package p = New package();

ConnectionManager sourceCM = p.Connections.Add("FLATFILE");

sourceCM.Name = "some-name";

ConnectionManagerFlatFileClass cmffc = sourceCM.InnerObject()

I get a compilation error on the last line saying I cannot implicitly cast as ConnectionManagerFlatFileClass. Fair enough, so I change the last line of code to:

ConnectionManagerFlatFileClass cmffc = (ConnectionManagerFlatFileClass)sourceCM.InnerObject()

Now it will compile. But when I run it I get the error:

"Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to class type "Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper.ConnectionManagerFlatFileClass'. COM components that enter the CLR and do not support IProvideClassInfo or that do not have interop assembly referenced will be wrapped in the __ComObject type. instances of this type cannot be cast to any other class; however they can be cast to interfaces as long as the underlying COM component supports QueryInterface calls for the IID of the interface"

Can anyone tell me how I can cast the ConnectionManager.InnerObject as a ConnectionManagerFlatFileClass please?

-Jamie

P.S. My ultimate aim here is to set the metdata of each of the columns defined by the flat file connection manager. I can't see how I can do that without referring to the connection manager as a ConnectionManagerFlatFileClass!

OK, it looks like I can reference the Columns collection of my flat file connection manager using

sourceCM.Properties["Columns"]

but that returns me an object of type DTSProperty which I've tried casting to IDTSOutputColumnCollection90 but it says it cannot convert a Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DtsProperty to Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.Wrapper.IDTSOutputColumnCollection90 which, again, makes complete sense!

So, if anyone can tell me how I can programatically access the columns in my flat file connection manager then I'd be very grateful.

DtsProperty.GetValue Method ?

DtsProperty is the definition of the property, and you want the actual value, which is where the GetValue method comes in.

I think the whole idea of this is to abstract you from the real class, such that they can be changed and updated at will without breaking existing code. Not too sure on the deal on binary compatability as we used to think of it, it seems to be less of an issue, but there is probably some good reason!

|||

Thanks mate, but that won't do it. However, I've managed to find the answer elsewhere (and for once in my life I didn't rely on Darren to give me the answer ). Namely, in this sample: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms161541.aspx

Here's the code that does it, turns out I DO need the Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper namespace:

using wrap = Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper;

...

private wrap.IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFile90 ffc = (wrap.IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFile90)sourceCM.InnerObject;

wrap.IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFileColumn90 col = ffc.Columns.Add();

OK, cool. I've got it working. It kinda begs the question tho, why is there no class in the Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime namespace that enables us to do it? Its not like configuring a FlatFile connection manager isn't core functionality. I've asked the same question elsewhere (sort of). Hopefully it'll get answered.

Program Connection Problem

Hi there,
I really hope that someone recognises this problem and can point me in the
direction of a solution.
We have SQL Server 2000 running on a server at our head office. We have a
program that runs in other sites that connect to the server via a VPN
connection HO. The program has been running perfectly for about a year now
without any problems. A few weeks ago, one machine in one of our sites
stopped opening a connection and has refused to open one ever since. We
hadn't had any problems anywhere else so we swapped the machine with a newer
one and thought nothing else about it. However, a couple of days ago another
machine in another site did the same thing. It simply refuses to open a
connection to the server. The error it throws is "SQL Server does not exist
or access denied". This strikes me as strange because he machine can ping
the sql server happily and it has no problems with the rest of its network
connectivity and the connection string uses the server admin user and
password. I've tried changing the machine IP address and HostName but that
has had no effect. The machine is running Windows 98 SE.
Now, I am pretty sure that there is nothing wrong with the program because
it has been running perfectly for ages and hasn't changed for nearly a year.
The program is running on about 20 identical 98 boxes in 15 sites. The first
machine to go was probably the busiest user of the program and this second
one is probably next.
So I'm thinking that this must be a SQL issue but we really don't have
anyone that knows that much about it. What I do know is that, in general,
the server is running ok. The program in question is probably the smallest
data-wise and has very little traffic, we have other much more complex
databases and programs running 24/7 on the server and they are all ok.
So, I guess the leading question is - does anyone have any ideas? Is there
some kind of connection log that has maxed out or something like that?
Any pointers would be fantastic.
Cheers
C-Ya Aly
Do client tools like UDL, osql and isql work from this problem machine? Can
this problem client machine ping any other sql servers in your network?
Cheers,

direction of a solution.
Cheers
C-Ya AlyDo client tools like UDL, osql and isql work from this problem machine? Can
this problem client machine ping any other sql servers in your network?
